In 1978, a young woman completed her MBBS — the first step of a journey that would, over the next four decades, quietly reshape healthcare in Kollengode. Like most young doctors, Dr. Padmini Sudevan’s early years were spent learning the trade the hard way: long shifts, unfamiliar towns, and the kind of hands-on medicine that textbooks can’t teach.
Her house surgeoncy in 1985 arrived in the same year as another beginning — her marriage, on 27th January 1985. On that same day, she moved to Kollengode with the love of her life — 140 km from her native place, a journey that in those days meant 5 to 6 hours on a bus, with three changes along the way. It was not a short trip to make for a new life, but she made it.
She started her career almost immediately, working at Madhaviamma Nursing Home that same year, and later at Palat Hospital in Palakkad. On 9th December 1985, she welcomed her first child.
After a short career break following her daughter’s birth, Dr. Padmini went back to work in Ottapalam, at a small hospital where her duty ran 24 hours a day, without a break. She worked this way from June 1986 through 1987 — a punishing schedule that would have discouraged most, but one that taught her the discipline that later shaped Aabind Hospital.
In April 1987, she moved to a mission hospital in Pothampadam, working there until December of that year. Then, in January 1988, she moved again — this time to Vandithavalam Co-operative Hospital. Each posting added a layer of experience: emergency care, round-the-clock resident medicine, rural healthcare with limited resources — the exact skills a small-town hospital founder would need.
By the time she’d worked across Ottapalam, Pothampadam and Vandithavalam, Dr. Padmini had gained something no single posting could have given her: exposure to a huge range of patients and conditions, across very different kinds of institutions. It was this breadth of experience that gave her the confidence to stop moving from hospital to hospital, and start something of her own.
On 18th February 1988, she opened an independent evening OPD on SV Street, Kollengode — seeing patients from 5 to 7 pm, charging a consulting fee of just ₹10. It began modestly: around six patients a day. But her patient queues kept growing, and by April, she expanded to a full working day — mornings from 9 am to 12 pm, and evenings from 5 to 7 pm.
Three years into her SV Street practice, in 1991, she moved her practice into Kollengode town itself. In 1993, she and her husband purchased the land the hospital still stands on today.
On 21st August 1994, that land became a hospital — in the truest, smallest sense of the word. Dr. Padmini and her husband inaugurated it together: one outpatient room, a small pharmacy, a labour room, and three inpatient beds. No grand opening, no fanfare — just a doctor, her husband, a promise, and a community that needed care closer to home.
As her practice grew, she began attending to obstetrics herself — personally seeing to deliveries throughout Kollengode and the surrounding area, at almost any hour she was needed.
In 2002, her husband was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme. Despite treatment, he passed away on 29th September 2002.
Dr. Padmini was not one to retreat, or to give up without a fight. Rather than slow down, she pushed the hospital forward — and in February 2003, she opened an operation theatre. A fellow colleague — a gynaecologist and laparoscopic surgeon — began visiting the hospital as a visiting surgeon, strengthening its surgical care.
Her children grew up inside the hospital’s story and chose to become part of it. Her daughter, Aaba, joined MBBS in 2004 and later married a fellow doctor. Her son, Aabind, joined MBBS in 2009 — the name the hospital itself now carries forward.
From a single evening OPD seeing six patients a day, Dr. Padmini Sudevan built a multi-specialty hospital that today serves Kollengode and its surrounding villages — offering emergency care, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, general medicine, orthopaedics, general surgery, dermatology, ENT, gastroenterology, radiology and laboratory services, all under one roof.
And after all these years, she still shows up. Every single day, she wakes up, reaches her OPD by 9 am, and stays until 9 pm — seeing 120 to 150 patients a day, and making sure every one of them receives the right treatment and the best possible care.
